Austin-based Riptano Lands $2.7 million Offering Professional Cassandra Support

The Austin-based startup was created to help turn Cassandra into the next big thing for storing and analyzing large amounts of data. Riptano’s co-founder, Matt Pfeil announced yesterday that Riptano is Live.

Cassandra is a highly scalable second-generation distributed database, bringing together Dynamo’s fully distributed design and Bigtable’s ColumnFamily-based data model. Cassandra was open sourced by Facebook in 2008, and is now developed by Apache committers and contributors from many companies.

Riptano is announcing an initial funding round, a $2.7 million infusion from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital and private investor Jason Calacanis. Rackspace Hosting is also an investor and a believer in this technology [Cassandra].

Riptano’s services include professional Cassandra support and training. Riptano provides 3 tiers of support for Apache Cassandra.

  • Bronze (Unlimited Cassandra support, 24 hour response time, 4 hours of app consultation and web + email support).
  • Silver (Unlimited Cassandra support, 4 hour response time, 16 hours of app consultation and web + email support).
  • Gold (Unlimited Cassandra support, 1 hour response time, 24 hours of app consultation and web + email + Phone support).

“We never imagined the U.S. government used Cassandra,” Riptano’s CEO Matt Pfeil says. “”There are a lot more users than we ever anticipated.”
